Every Space, folder, and file stored on a creative.space server comes with a shareable URL, enabling access through our Web App.
We’ve taken a unique approach to eliminating friction in content creation workflows than the cloud. We call this new paradigm Fog, since it blends the convenience of cloud storage with the performance and desktop accessibility of network-attached storage, offering a ‘cloud-like’ experience at the edge of your network.
Benefits of Fog
- Unified Storage: Network-attached storage servers, which are directly accessed in apps like Premiere Pro, are also reachable via a web browser and FTP, for both local and remote users.
- Immediate Sharing: Bypass the traditional upload-then-share routine. With creative.space, your files and projects are instantly shareable, thanks to unified links.
- Cost-Efficient: Eliminate the need for extra uploads and data copies, reducing expenses typically associated with cloud storage, especially in large video projects.
Using File Paths
Desktop Paths
Multiple users can mount a space or folder to their desktops and access the same files simultaneously. In this context, file paths can be copied from your OS file browser, such as Finder or File Explorer, to share links with other users who have the same mounts on their computer.
Applications
Post production applications like Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve reference file paths, so collaboration is often more efficient using the workflows specific to those tools.
Clips and sequences can be shared between projects using exchange formats like XML, AAF, DRB/DRT, etc. By mounting the same network shares, imported assets will be able to reference the file paths without needing to relink.
These applications each have their own workflow for facilitating multi-user collaboration, which users to work inside the same project. Premiere Pro has project locking and productions. DaVinci Resolve has cloud libraries and collaboration mode. Avid Media Composer has shared projects and bin locking. Final Cut Pro is the odd-man out, but 3rd party tools like PostLab can be used for git-style version management. No matter which app you use, mounting the same network share to your desktop means that once media is imported, everyone will have access to it when they open the project.
Using Web Links
Types of Links
Both our desktop and web apps support copying links for files stored in Spaces. However, you can share links from other parts of the web app as well:
- Spaces: Links to Spaces, folders, and files on your server.
- Ingest: Links to read-only USB, SMB, and FTP connections and contents.
- Libraries: Links to a Library’s current tag-based filter, excluding the selected asset.
- Snapshots: Links to a Snapshot and its contents, which may have expiration settings.
Use Cases
There are lots of ways to use links in creative.space. Here are just a few:
- Sharing a Clip: Distribute a media asset link for viewing, metadata access, or downloading.
- Launch a Project: Share a project link that can be launched in Premiere Pro.
- Upload to a Folder: Provide a folder link for direct uploads via the browser or Finder.
- Tag-based Workflow: Share a Library tag filter link for dynamic asset presentation, useful in review and approval processes or looking for material to re-use.
Ensure that recipients of shared links have read permissions for the entire path from the Space to the specific folder or file.
Users must log in with their secure creative.space account to access shared content. This account governs their permissions across web, desktop, and FTP interfaces. If they lack access rights, the link will not display the content.
Users with read access to a Space can view all assets in its Library but won’t have inspection privileges.
Unified Namespace
Each creative.space system includes an mDNS (Multiplex Domain Name Server), providing a custom .local URL for your server, streamlining link translation and ensuring consistency in referenced paths. The creative.space desktop app intelligently manages connections (ethernet, wifi, VPN) for optimal speed.
Missing a .local address? For organizations with advanced I.T. support, alternative DNS solutions can replace our mDNS. In such cases, consult your I.T. administrator for server access details.
Remote Access
creative.space primarily serves as a network-attached storage server, optimized for local network use. To extend this network remotely, VPNs are an effective solution. ZeroTier offers a software-based VPN, easily managed within our web and desktop apps. Fortinet, suitable for enterprise-level needs, can be integrated by contacting DigitalGlue support for unified credential use.
Bookmarks
You can use your web browser’s bookmarking capability to save links for specific pages within the web app. This method provides quick access to files, folder, spaces, or any other area in the web app you frequently visit.
